Pinterest releases their new “invite only” app Shuffles and it’s breaking TikTok and the iOS charts
You may have noticed the new viral trend blowing up TikTok, with users posting collage style video mood boards created by the new app ‘Shuffles’, from the social photo sharing titan Pinterest.
While it’s no secret that Pinterest has been eyeing off the transition from a social photo sharing app and how they can address consumer demand for short form video content, they’ve also recently launched ‘Idea Pins’ and ‘Pinterest TV’ which works like a live shopping portal.
So, what exactly is Shuffles, what does it do and why is it breaking TikTok?
The new app gives users the ability to build their own collages using Pinterest’s mega library or by using their own pics. One of the coolest features uses Pinterest’s own proprietary tech that lets Shufflers cut an object out from their own photos, Pinterest boards or other Pins.
While a similar function will be available in apple’s new iOS 16 release, Shuffles seems to have the edge. When you search for or snap a photo, the app can automatically identify the object and all you do is tap the “Add” button to place it into your collage, where it can be resized and moved around the screen.
Users can also choose to add effects and motion to the images making them shake, spin, pulse, swivel and loads of other cool stuff. For example, you could add an image of a cocktail shaker and animate it to shake.
Users can save their masterpiece locally to their own device, share with friends in messages or publish to a dedicated community using specific hashtags, which are searchable in the app’s discovery section with other users’ creations.
While the future of Shuffles isn’t yet crystal clear and they have declined to reveal any real deets about its monetisation potential, a Pinterest spokesperson did recently confirm the app is the brainchild of their new in-house incubator TwoTwenty.
“Shuffles is a standalone app created by TwoTwenty, Pinterest’s innovative incubator team. Shuffles is an engaging way to create, publish and share visual content,” the spokesperson said. “With more people coming to our platform for creative inspiration, we’re continuously experimenting with new ways to help Pinners and Creators bring their ideas to life. As this app is in its initial test phase, we don’t have any additional details to share on the record at this moment.”
So how can you get in on the action?
Currently, the app remains “invite only”, but if you head to your home screen, you can join the waitlist, otherwise you need to know a current Shuffler who is given 5 invite codes to share with their nearest and dearest.
While the exclusivity could be seen as a marketing ploy and a genius one at that, Pinterest says it’s simply ‘invite-only’ at the moment because it hasn’t been publicly launched. Not bad for an app that’s already ranked No. 5 in iPhone’s Top Lifestyle Apps in the U.S and has already broken the Top 20 non-gaming apps the U.S. It’s not just the US going made for it, it hit No. 1 Overall app in Ireland, New Zealand and the U.K. It hit No. 2 overall in here in Oz and No. 3 in Canada.
In their own words Shuffles is a new app designed for collective collaging curate your ultimate festival outfit, design your dream bedroom or create a mood board.
Could Shuffles be a game changer for brands and businesses, we think so!
